The Best Restaurants Near the Eiffel Tower (Where a Paris Local Actually Eats)
Updated: Oct 15
Every evening, on the hour, the Eiffel Tower bursts into five minutes of glitter, thousands of lights flickering against the dark sky, and the whole Champ-de-Mars lets out a little sigh. Ten minutes' walk away, on rue Saint-Dominique, the windows of the bistros are fogged up, there is a smell of butter and grilled meat in the air, and the tables are full of people who live in the neighbourhood. That contrast says everything about eating near the Eiffel Tower: the best meals are rarely the ones right underneath it.
The best restaurants near the Eiffel Tower are Le Jules Verne and Madame Brasserie on the Tower itself, for the experience; the bistros of rue Saint-Dominique, such as Le Bistrot des Fables, for a real Parisian meal ten minutes away; and Les Ombres or Girafe for a dinner with the Tower in full view. Avoid the cafés with photo menus on the avenues around the Champ-de-Mars, and book ahead.
Can you eat inside the Eiffel Tower?
Yes, at two very different restaurants. Le Jules Verne, on the second floor, is the Tower's fine dining table, reached by a private elevator in the south pillar and run by chef Frédéric Anton. It is the classic choice for a proposal or a milestone anniversary, and tables by the windows are booked months in advance.
Madame Brasserie, on the first floor, created by chef Thierry Marx, is the relaxed alternative: a modern brasserie with seasonal French cooking and views over the river and Trocadéro. Lunch there is one of the nicest ways to combine a Tower visit with a proper meal without the formality of the Jules Verne.
Where do locals eat near the Eiffel Tower?
On rue Saint-Dominique and around rue Cler, in the 7th arrondissement, about ten minutes' walk from the Tower. This is a residential, well-heeled neighbourhood, and its bistros cook for regulars, not for passing crowds. Le Bistrot des Fables, at 139 rue Saint-Dominique, is the reference. It occupies the space of the much-loved Café Constant, opened by chef Christian Constant, and is now run by David Bottreau, who was his right-hand man. The cooking is traditional French, generous and precise. Book ahead, it is popular for good reason.
Rue Cler itself is a pedestrian market street lined with cheese shops, bakeries, butchers and fruit stalls, perfect for a morning stroll before lunch. On a fine day, it is also where I would put together a picnic to eat on the Champ-de-Mars, with the Tower above you.
Which restaurants have the best view of the Eiffel Tower?
Les Ombres, on the rooftop of the Musée du quai Branly, has a glass roof that frames the Tower so closely you feel you could touch it, especially at night when it sparkles. Across the river, Girafe, in the Cité de l'Architecture on the Trocadéro, serves seafood on a terrace facing the Tower straight on, with a stylish, festive atmosphere. Both are ideal for a celebration. Ask for a table by the window when you book. For more ideas for a special evening, here are the most romantic restaurants in Paris.
Where to go for a special dinner near the Eiffel Tower?
If food matters more to you than the view, walk about fifteen minutes to rue Surcouf, near the Invalides, where chef David Toutain cooks some of the most inventive and delicate tasting menus in Paris. I wrote about his restaurant here. It is the kind of meal people remember long after they have forgotten the queue at the Tower.
How to avoid tourist traps near the Eiffel Tower
The rule is simple: walk ten minutes. The cafés directly around the Champ-de-Mars and the Trocadéro, with menus in six languages, photos of every dish and someone at the door inviting you in, are rarely good value. A few streets away, in the 7th arrondissement, quality goes up and prices come down. Book for dinner, ask for the formule déjeuner at lunch, and if you are not sure what to order, here is how to read a French menu with confidence.

My own favourite near the Tower is Le Bistrot des Fables, a traditional, cosy bistro right in the heart of the 7th arrondissement, a few minutes' walk from the Eiffel Tower. When it moved into the charming space of the former Café Constant, I confess I was wary: would they keep up the high standard of the kitchen? Then I went, and I left happy and reassured. The address is in good hands.
After the Tower, many of my travellers continue along the Seine to the Orsay. Here is where to eat near the Musée d'Orsay.
